Wedding Planner or Plan It Yourself? An Honest Guide for Indian Weddings (2026)

In short

Plan it yourself if the wedding is local, in one or two venues, with someone at home free to run it. Hire a planner for destination or multi-day weddings, room blocks or guests travelling in. Either way, insist on a published fee.

Families in India planned weddings long before planners existed, and many still do it well. So the honest question isn't whether a planner is better. It's whether your wedding is the kind that needs one. This guide sets out when planning it yourself works, when a planner earns the fee, and what to insist on if you hire one.

When can you plan a wedding yourself?

Planning it yourself works best when the wedding is local. One city, one or two venues, guests who mostly live nearby, and a family member with real time to give across the final months. A venue with in-house catering and its own décor partners takes a large share of the logistics off your hands.

When does a wedding planner earn the fee?

It gets hard when the wedding travels or stretches. Destination weddings, three or more days of functions, room blocks, guests flying in, vendors from another city, family abroad who need updates. None of it is difficult on its own. The work is keeping it all moving at once, and the risk is a missed detail on the day while your family is meant to be hosting.

Most weddings sit somewhere in between. Day-of coordination covers the gap.

Does a planner take away control over prices?

Some wedding directories warn that a planner takes away control over prices and venues and pushes budgets up. That happens when a planner's fee is hidden inside vendor quotes. You can rule it out with four questions: is your fee published, do vendor quotes and contracts come to us in our name, can we meet every vendor ourselves, and do we sign off every payment?

If you hire a planner, the minimum you should get is one person accountable for the whole wedding, a written budget before anything is signed, vendor quotes in your name, a run sheet for every function and a team on the ground on the days. These are the things that let a family be present at its own wedding.

What does Dream Weddings charge?

At Dream Weddings by TRIPN we publish our planning collections, starting from ₹2,50,000 + GST. We carry around 60 weddings a year with a 24-person full-time team, so your wedding is run by our own people, not a freelancer network assembled for the day.

Is there a middle path?

There is also a middle path. Plan the wedding yourself and bring in help only for the days that matter: day-of coordination for the functions, or hospitality for guest travel, rooms and transfers. It costs less than full planning and protects the parts most likely to go wrong.

Decide by complexity, not by budget. A large local wedding can be simple to run, and a small destination wedding can be complicated. Count the venues, the days and the people travelling. If that list is short and someone at home has the time, plan it yourself. If it isn't, get help.

Common questions

Do I need a wedding planner for an Indian wedding?+

Not always. A local wedding at one or two venues, with mostly local guests and a family member free to run it, can be planned without one. Destination weddings, three or more days of functions, room blocks and guests travelling in are where a planner usually earns the fee.

Does a wedding planner reduce control over prices?+

Only if the fee is hidden inside vendor quotes. Ask for a published planning fee, vendor quotes and contracts in your own name, and the right to meet every vendor yourself. With those in place you see every rupee and still make every decision.

What should a wedding planner give me?+

One person accountable for the whole wedding, a written budget before anything is signed, vendor quotes in your name, a run sheet for every function and a team on the ground on the days. If any of these are missing, keep looking.

Is there a middle path between a full planner and doing it yourself?+

Yes. Many families plan the wedding themselves and hire help only for the days that matter: day-of coordination for the functions, or hospitality for guest travel and rooms.
