How to prepare a wedding guest list?

Start with both families' must-invite lists, count households rather than names, and sort everyone into three tiers: must, should and could. Agree the cap before the venue, because every guest is rooms multiplied by nights multiplied by plates. Keep the third tier as the reserve for when the first two decline.

Working with a planner

What does a wedding planner do?

A wedding planner builds the plan and then carries it: the budget, the venue shortlist and negotiation, every vendor contract and payment, guest rooms and travel, a run sheet for each function and a team on the ground on the days. The family attends; the planner carries. A day-of coordinator only runs the final weeks.

Is a wedding planner worth it?

For a local wedding at one or two venues with a family member free to run it, often not. For a destination or multi-day wedding with room blocks and guests travelling, usually yes: a planner buying for sixty weddings a year gets vendor rates a one-time buyer cannot, and those savings often offset the fee. Judge it on a real quote.

How long do Indian weddings last?

Most Indian weddings run two to four days: haldi, mehendi and sangeet on the days before, then the wedding day with the baraat, varmala, pheras and vidaai, and a reception the same night or soon after. Destination weddings compress it all into two or three days because guests are travelling. The baraat alone usually takes 45 to 75 minutes.

What is a sangeet ceremony?

Sangeet means music. It is the evening before the wedding, or close to it, when both families sing, dance and perform for each other. It began as a small gathering of the women of the family and is now often the most produced night of the wedding.

What are the 7 steps in an Indian marriage?

The seven steps are the saptapadi, the seven pheras around the sacred fire that make a Hindu marriage binding. Each circuit carries a vow, traditionally for nourishment, strength, prosperity, happiness, children, health and lifelong companionship, though the wording varies by community. Some families take four pheras; the Sikh Anand Karaj has four laavan instead.

Do Indian weddings have bridesmaids?

Not traditionally. The bride's sisters, cousins and close friends play the part without the title: they carry the phoolon ki chadar, hide the groom's shoes for joota chupai and lead the sangeet. Many urban weddings now name bridesmaids and groomsmen for the sangeet and the photographs, but there is no ritual role for them in the pheras.

What does a sherwani cost in India in 2026?

The groom's market is unusually well-published. Manyavar's retail price list runs ₹7,999 to ₹51,999. Premium boutique sherwanis sit at roughly ₹10,000 to ₹1.5 lakh, and designer couture reaches around ₹5.8 lakh at the top brand-listed end. That is a seventy-fold spread from floor to ceiling, which is why the sherwani budget should be decided before the first shop visit, not after.

Destination weddings

Is it cheaper to do a destination wedding?

No, not in total. A Delhi banquet is a ₹999–4,500 plate per function; a destination wedding is ₹60,000–80,000 a head, because the host buys rooms, two days of meals and transfers for everyone. Our rule of thumb is two to four times a home-city event. It only looks cheaper when the guest list shrinks.

What is a destination wedding?

A destination wedding is one held away from the couple's home city, with guests travelling in and staying for two to four days of functions at one venue, usually a resort or palace hotel. The host covers rooms and meals for every guest, so the list is smaller and the weekend feels like a holiday for everyone, not just the couple.

How to plan a destination wedding?

Pick the destination and date together, 14–18 months out for peak season, and confirm the planner and venue before anything else. Block rooms before décor, then book the photographer and sangeet entertainment. Send save-the-dates 8–10 months ahead with travel details, run one hospitality desk for transfers and rooms, and keep two or three days of functions at one venue so guests never move.
