Overview of Indian weddings

Indian weddings span 3-7 days with pre-wedding events (mehendi, sangeet, haldi), the wedding ceremony, reception, and farewell functions. Religious rituals vary by faith (Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh). Family involvement is central - grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins all participate and contribute to celebrations.

Pre-wedding events and ceremonies

Mehendi: Women apply henna 2-3 days before wedding, typically at bride's family home. Sangeet: Music and dancing celebration, often combined with mehendi. Haldi: Turmeric paste blessing ceremony on wedding morning. Engagement: Ring exchange and family introduction. Each event has cultural significance and specific etiquette.

Wedding day and ceremonies by religion

Hindu weddings feature baraat (groom's procession), mandap (ceremonial pavilion), saptapadi (seven steps), and mangal sutra (sacred necklace). Muslim weddings include nikah (contract) and walima (reception). Christian weddings follow church ceremony with Indian cultural elements. Sikh weddings include Gurdwara ceremony and anand karaj rituals. Each tradition has meaning and family roles.

Post-wedding events

Vidaai: Bride's emotional departure to groom's home with parent blessings. Griha Pravesh: Bride's formal entry to new home with family rituals. Reception at groom's side (if needed). Honeymoon and settling into married life.
