Is an Indian Wedding Abroad Legal? Where You Can Marry, Where It Is a Ceremony, and How to Register It in India

In short

In some countries, yes: Sri Lanka and Mauritius marry visiting couples at the registrar for small official fees, and Italy's town halls do for about €1,400–6,300 plus apostilled documents. In Thailand, Bali, Vietnam, the UAE, Oman and Turkey the wedding is a ceremony, because residency, religion or nationality rules stand in the way, and the marriage is registered in India afterwards.

Every family planning a wedding abroad eventually asks whether the marriage will be real. The answer depends on the country, and on whether the question is about the pheras or the paperwork. This guide sets out, country by country, where two Indian citizens can legally marry, where the wedding is a ceremony, and how the marriage is registered in India afterwards, from the Acts, the embassies' own pages and the rules researched in October 2026.

Where you can marry

Where you can marry. Sri Lanka registers marriages of foreign couples at the registrar for small official fees, with notice arranged through the hotel or a local lawyer. Mauritius does the same at its civil status office, and Hindu ceremonies with local pandits are routine on the island. Italy's town halls marry non-residents for fees of about €1,400–1,600 in Rome, €2,500–6,300 in Florence and €1,700–3,600 in Venice, plus apostilled and translated documents at €80–150 each and a declaration of no impediment from the Indian consulate; allow weeks for the paperwork.

Where it is a ceremony

Where it is a ceremony. Thailand does not register a marriage between two tourists, and an Anand Karaj must be held inside a gurdwara. Vietnam's process for two foreigners is slow and sources disagree on whether it is possible at all. Bali requires both partners to share a religion and a religious ceremony before the civil office. The Indian missions in Dubai, Muscat, Doha and Manama marry only couples where one partner holds local residence; Abu Dhabi's civil court is the Gulf exception, marrying visitors for AED 300. Turkey's registrars are doubtful about two foreigners of the same nationality.

What the embassy does

What the embassy does. Indian missions abroad solemnise and register marriages under the Foreign Marriage Act 1969 for couples who meet the residence rules: the embassy in Dublin asks for 30 days' residence, a newspaper notice, a 30-day wait and three Indian witnesses for €48; the consulates in Washington and San Francisco register a US marriage the same day for US$52 with three witnesses and an apostilled certificate. For a wedding held at a resort, the mission's role is usually to attest the local certificate, where one exists, so it is recognised in India.

Registering in India

Registering in India. If a Hindu ceremony with the saptapadi was performed abroad, the marriage already exists in law; register it under the Hindu Marriage Act at the registrar where either of you lives, with the photographs, the invitation, a priest's certificate and two witnesses. Delhi issues the certificate on the appointment date, Karnataka within a working day, Uttar Pradesh instantly online with Aadhaar. If no ceremony counted, or the couple is inter-faith, solemnise under the Special Marriage Act instead: 30 days' notice to the marriage officer, then the declaration before three witnesses, for a government fee of a few rupees.

The one rule that matters

The one rule that matters. The Supreme Court held in 2024 that a marriage certificate without a real ceremony creates no Hindu marriage, and warned couples against registering first for a visa and holding the wedding later. Abroad, the same logic protects you: it is the pheras, the laavan or the nikah at the resort, properly performed and photographed, that make the marriage, and the Indian certificate that proves it. Plan the ceremony as the legal event and the registration as the paperwork, and nothing abroad can unsettle it.

Common questions

Can two Indian citizens legally marry abroad?+

In some countries, yes: Sri Lanka and Mauritius marry visiting couples at the registrar for small official fees, and Italy's town halls do for about €1,400–6,300 plus apostilled documents. In Thailand, Bali, Vietnam, the UAE, Oman and Turkey the wedding is a ceremony, because residency, religion or nationality rules stand in the way, and the marriage is registered in India afterwards.

Can Indians get married in Thailand?+

Not as tourists: Thailand's district offices do not register a marriage between two foreigners on holiday, so a Thai wedding is symbolic. The pheras or Anand Karaj are held there, and the marriage is registered in India under the Hindu Marriage Act or the Special Marriage Act. An Anand Karaj must now take place inside a gurdwara.

Can Indians get married in Dubai?+

The Indian consulate in Dubai marries only couples where one partner holds UAE residence, so a Dubai wedding is a ceremony with registration in India. The exception is Abu Dhabi's civil family court, which marries visiting couples of any nationality for AED 300 and issues a certificate the Indian embassy can attest.

Can Indians legally marry in Bali?+

Only if both hold the same religion: Indonesia requires a religious ceremony first, then registration at the civil office. A Hindu couple can do this through a Balinese temple ceremony and the civil registry, with documents from the Indian consulate. Most Indian families treat the Bali wedding as the ceremony and register at home.

How do we register a wedding held abroad in India?+

If a Hindu ceremony with the saptapadi was performed, register it under the Hindu Marriage Act at the registrar where either of you lives, with the photographs, the invitation and a priest's certificate; Delhi issues the certificate on the appointment date. If no ceremony counted, solemnise under the Special Marriage Act: 30 days' notice to the marriage officer, then the declaration before three witnesses.

Is a foreign marriage certificate valid in India?+

Yes, once apostilled or attested by the Indian mission in that country, and India recognises a marriage validly performed abroad. Most couples still register it in India as well, because banks, passports and visas ask for an Indian certificate. The Supreme Court held in 2024 that a certificate without a real ceremony creates no Hindu marriage, so the ceremony itself is what counts.
